I’m A Proud Mom: And It Has Nothing To Do With My Kids

So often the measure of a good mom is determined by who her children become. Although this holds some truth, when we consider the reality that the only people we can truly control are ourselves, this statement becomes relatively false. What if, as moms, we hold pride in the fact that we are good moms because we take care of ourselves, we are present caregivers of our children, we are good gatekeepers of our homes, and we haven’t fallen apart while holding our households together! This is the true depiction of a good mom.

Motherhood is this most overworked and underrated job, if there ever was one. Moms often feed their families on an empty stomach, put kids to bed while tirelessly planning out the rest of our night, and wiping tears while holding ours in. And most times these things are done without any thank-yous, accolades or acknowledgements. These things are happening before we even discuss things that moms do outside of the home. It is for this reason that we as moms have to take pride in our immensely influential roles as moms. Holding it to the standard it deserves and not allowing anyone to devalue it.

Navigating through life without the responsibilities of caring for another human life is difficult. As woman, we are wired in a very intricate and emotional manner; we are innate caregivers and born nurturers. Considering this, it’s so easy to get caught up in our roles as moms, because of the nature of our make-up. Because of this, we attach our worthiness to who our children become. However, I challenge you to consider that your children are their own people and although we have a great amount of influence on who they become, our kids will essentially become who they are meant to be, and that has very little to do with who we are.

So #gracedmommy, be proud! Give yourself space and permission and simply thank yourself for still being here and knocking the heck out of this assignment called motherhood!
